The Seldom Scene
Bluegrass at its finest.

Seldom SceneThe Seldom Scene has long been regarded as one of the most progressive bands in bluegrass and as one of the finest acts in the whole genre. Since its inception in 1971, the Seldom Scene has thrived on playing bluegrass a little differently than everyone else. If other bands used a fiddler, the Seldom Scene used a Dobro; if others relied on old standards, the Seldom Scene played rock classics like J.J. Cale's "After Midnight."

Through skilled musicianship and an urban approach to bluegrass, the Seldom Scene has become one of the most influential – if not the most influential – bluegrass band of the last 30 years.

The Tempest
William Shakespeare
performed by Mary Baldwin University Wits

The Tempest by WaterhouseTheater at Lime Kiln has 40 years of history with “The Bard.” Lime Kiln opened for the first time with A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 1967. The University Wits, the student organization of the M. Litt MFA program in Shakespeare and Renaissance Literature in Performance at Mary Baldwin College in partnership with the American Shakespeare Center, brought us A Comedy of Errors last season, and this year they perform Shakespeare’s “farewell” play, a “romance” about the sorcerer Prospero, the deposed Duke of Milan, his daughter Miranda and featuring their companions Ariel and Calaban.

The Kiln, with its rustic charm and natural beauty, is the perfect theatre setting for Shakespeare, and in particular, The Tempest!

Our Town
by Thornton Wilder
performed by Southern Virginia University Theatre Department

Thornton Wilder in Our TownTheater at Lime Kiln welcomes back the SVU Theatre Department with their production of Our Town, a three act play by Thornton Wilder which is, perhaps, the most frequently produced play by an American playwright.

The play is set in the fictional community of Grover's Corners, modeled after several New Hampshire towns in the Mount Monadnock region: Jaffrey, Peterborough, Dublin, and others. Using meta-theatrical devices, the play is set in a 1930's theater. Through the actions of the Stage Manager, the town of Grover's Corners is created for the audience and scenes from its history between the years of 1901 and 1913 play out.

The Commander Cody Band

Commander CodyThe Commander Cody Band was first conceived in 1968, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, but arrived in San Francisco in 1969, just in time to catch the tale end of the summer of love. They were 8 pieces strong, with the Commander himself (a.k.a. George Frayne) on the piano, 3 guitarists, fiddle/sax, pedal steel guitar, bass and drums - out of which 4 sang lead. Basically, they represented the essence of American roots music.

Eventually, they signed to Paramount Records, and the twangy “Hot Rod Lincoln” was a runaway hit, reaching the top ten in 1972. A few more tunes breached the top 40 as they hit the concert trail, playing the legendary Fillmore Auditorium, and finding themselves on bills with the Grateful Dead, The Doors, The Jefferson Airplane, Alice Cooper, Led Zeppelin and The Eagles. They also backed up legends Gene Vincent, Link Wray and John Lennon. Later, their 1974 album Live From Deep in the Heart of Texas was named as one of Rolling Stones 100 Greatest of all times!

As always, the old Commander Cody himself is behind the piano, leading the musical mayhem and controlled chaos, and sporting his legendary antics and ability to spark up even the toughest crowds.

LD MillerClayton's guitar playing has been compared to the early genius of Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan and his vocal maturity is well beyond his years. Cole's drumsticks are a natural extension of him and his vocals are already developing an old blues man's power and passion. LD has been called the world's greatest living harmonica player at just age 14 by both media sources and by major artists.
